Tanya Rankin Talks About The Dreaded Word Asbestos and How To Stay Calm
Tanya Rankin: Hi, it’s Tanya Rankin in Williams Lake. I want to clear up a little misunderstanding with respect to vermiculite insulation. Here in the Cariboo there are quite a few homes that were built in that era where vermiculite insulation was considered the norm to use in your attic, and sometimes vermiculite insulation can contain traces of asbestos. Now, asbestos, as soon as we hear that word we think “Oh my gosh, we don`t want anything to do with it.” Two things, one if you Google asbestos and read up on it, left untouched it is not a health hazard, its only if you open it up it starts to spread everywhere, it’s the little particles that float in the air that would be a problem. But on top of that, asbestos can be removed, it is a bit expensive and you have to have someone come in from out of town, we don’t have anyone here locally, but it can be dealt with, it isn’t a reason for alarm and it’s so important that we know how to deal with these issues in the right way versus people panicking and thinking the house is forever toxic or whatever they think.
